Tips for getting into the gardening groove

Posted: Thursday, March 04, 2010

·         Check with your county Cooperative Extension for quality gardening advice.

·         Take some gardening classes. Lifespring (an adult learning community) located in Saugerties, NY, is offering basic gardening classes this spring. lifespringsaugerties.com

·         Grow something from seed that you’ve never grown before. Everything you will need can be purchased at your favorite garden center: seed starting mix, seeds and domed seed flats.

·         Start a compost pile. This is a good way to recycle leaves, grass clippings and kitchen scraps. The resulting compost is an excellent garden soil amendment.

·         A simple homemade deer deterrent can be made with ingredients found in the kitchen. Into 1 gallon of tepid water, add 1 beaten raw egg and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent. This is best done in a jug with a snug fitting top. I put my mix in a sunny spot for about a week and then spray my plants. You’ll have to re-spray this formula after each heavy rain.
