Save money and get savvy with these tools.

Check out these great new products for your home! While your new smart power strip saves you money, don your noise suppression headphones so you don’t have to listen to your neighbor power sanding her garage doors.

Power products from RYOBI

Earlier this year, RYOBI introduced a Tek4 5 pc. Combo Kit. These tools feature a 4-volt Lithium-ion rechargeable battery that outlasts 6,000 AA alkaline batteries. My son recalled Ryobi once made fishing equipment, but they sold that division. I brought along all the samples while visiting his home recently so we’d have a variety of testers.

Audio Plus™ Noise Suppression Headphones (Model #RP4530) is ideal for a variety of situations, including woodworking, hunting, mowing the lawn and NASCAR® races. These state-of-the-art headphones reduce harmful impulse and background noises, yet include speech amplification technology to enhance close-range conversations. Weather-resistant, they also feature an auxiliary input for iPod and MP3 capability. My son used them when snow blowing and said they were comfortable and reduced the noise, as promised.

Portable Power Source (Model #RP4900) – This compact, go-anywhere tool is perfect for those who need immediate back-up to charge electronics, including cell phones, BlackBerry® smartphones, iPods and MP3 players. It is ideal for camping, boating and around the house. My son liked the charger for its portability. He thought it was great for travel with its multi-heads, but felt that, like the design of the other products here, the battery screw top should attach to the unit. A case for the Power Source and the connectors would also be helpful.

Snips: a Power Cutter

Do you ever bring home a product from the store that is so tightly packed with plastic and ties that you get frustrated before you completely unwrap it? Both my son and daughter-in-law loved the power cutter’s ability to cut right through that kind of overkill. Snips cuts aluminum, wire, carpet, paper and annoying packaging. It is lightweight and easy to maneuver, with no sharp edge. My kids liked the fact that it has a safety button; so it is kid safe.

The Combo Kit also freatures a LED Flashlight and screwdriver (not reviewed). Purchase at homedepot.com. Some products sold in sets only.

Saving Money. Saving Power.

Many of the power strips and peripheral devices in your home and office are sucking power even when not in use. Products like the SmartStrip Power Saving Surge Protector are putting an end to the waste. When the SmartStrip detects that a main device (for example, the plasma screen in a home theater setup  or a computer) has been turned off, it automatically cuts power to that device’s peripherals. The average home can save as much as 260 watts per hour, or trim 113 Kilowatts from a monthly utility bill.
